Giving a “Nod”

nod

As the award season approaches in most industries, I recently reflected on the accomplishments made in my career and in our company as a whole. It reminded me of the blessings that a special Nod in 2015 brought to our team and to my personal growth. It made me consider that giving a “nod” to a fellow colleague or associate could generate the same results for them.

I took action to nominate a person I felt rarely got the attention that was deserved. Always going the extra mile to step in and help, volunteering time to educate and be a sounding board in their respective career. Regardless of the outcome my nod will bring, it gave me pleasure to share with this person how I felt. It was clear that this small gesture will make a difference in that person and only grow our relationship.

Giving a nod is described as an expression to give someone permission to do something. It can be a simple gesture with just a smile or something more in depth. My “nod” is meant to give this person permission to go for it, to accept appreciation and use that power to showcase it among her peers and clients she wishes to obtain. Many managers, friends or co-workers all want it but rarely give it. I hope you will reflect on someone who deserves a nod. It can empower them to be even better, take the promotion, go back to school, or whatever it is you feel they need to propel them.

Without the “nods” of others over my career, I wouldn’t be who I am nor capable to share this powerful gift with others. A good word of advice: Never stop giving your best just because someone doesn’t give you credit, you never know who is capturing that example!
